Candide, published in 1759, is Voltaire's most famous work and a masterpiece of philosophical satire. The story follows the naive and optimistic Candide, who is taught by his tutor Pangloss that we live in 'the best of all possible worlds.' After being expelled from his childhood home, Candide embarks on a series of increasingly absurd and catastrophic adventures across Europe and South America, encountering war, natural disasters, and human cruelty at every turn. Through its sharp wit and relentless irony, the novella satirizes Leibnizian optimism and exposes the hypocrisy and corruption of Voltaire's era.
