Set in the fictional county of Wessex, the novel tells the story of Bathsheba Everdene, a beautiful and independent young woman who inherits her uncle's farm. Her life becomes entangled with three very different men: the devoted shepherd Gabriel Oak, the wealthy and obsessive farmer William Boldwood, and the dashing but reckless Sergeant Francis Troy.
