Opticks (1704) is Isaac Newton's landmark study of the nature of light and color, his second major scientific work after the Principia. Through meticulous prism experiments, Newton demonstrated that white light is composed of a spectrum of colors, each with a specific refrangibility. The book introduces the color circle, discusses Newton's rings, and proposes a corpuscular theory of light. Written in English rather than Latin, it is a masterpiece of early scientific exposition.
